Kc expresses in a ratio the relative amounts of products and reactants that will be present at equilibrium. The correspondence between the numerical value of the constant and the actual amounts of substances is generally not simple, however, because of the law of mass action. However, it is possible to use the constant in a predictive manner by the careful application of stoichiometry and algebra. The examples that follow give a general idea of how this can be done.
