Chemistry Software and Multimedia

Chemland 6.0
You must have this. This package is great for classroom demonstration as well as student inquiry working independently. Demonstrates concepts and allows manipulation of experimental variables with real-time results evident. IT'S FREE!!!!!!!!!! From William J. Vining at Hartwick College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. You can try our on-line Shockwave versions of some of the components here.
Mr. Plot
This nifty little plotting utility was part of Chemland 5.0 (see above) but got left out due to a printing problem in version 6.0. I have been given permission to distribute it as a stand-alone application. It will plot single series, curve fit, etc. A small application, great for students who would like to be able to plot at home but lack Excel or something similar. Prints fine on a variety of printers I have tried--except dot-matrix. The *.zip file contains a README instruction file for installation. 42 Kb, for Windows.
The irYdium Project Virtual Laboratory
This is a (free) downloadable (5.9 Mb) version of the online JAVA program which allows you to simulate a variety of laboratory experiments.
Sciences Jeopardy! Games
As featured in the Journal of Chemical Education, HTML-format Jeopardy! games from J.J. Grabowski at the University of Pittsburg. Included are a number of different games as well as complete instructions for producing your own.
Chemical Jeopardy!
My own HTML-format Jeopardy! game, inspired partly by the link above. 13 sample games are available for download, covering a year-long chemistry course, along with complete instructions for producing your own games with a word processor and graphics program.
WebBook
A nifty little program (for Windows) which connects to NIST, Aldrich and ChemFinder when you type in a molecular formula for an organic compound; shows line structure, molar mass, CAS number and can display boiling point or other physical data. Follow link to directory and download both the *.exe and *.ocx files into the same directory. Requires internet connection to run. Free, from Bob Hanson's Chemistry Course Toolkit at St. Olaf College.
General Chemistry Programs
A collection of (mostly) Freeware programs addressing various topics/needs for general chemistry students, including various molar mass calculators, buffer solution calculator, periodic table tools, isotope decay data, etc. For Windows.
Chemistry Programs
Free chemistry programs including a nifty basic laboratory stat program (I use it with my AP students). From Dean Turner at Shorter College. For Windows.
Graphics and plotting software
More from the site immediately above. For Windows.
Chem 1 Problem Proctor
A set of 20 interactive problem sets covering traditional general chemistry topics which you can download and install for free. Also available is a workbook in PDF format. Lessons run under DOS. File will install in Windows. From Stephen Lower at Simon Fraser University.
Spektrus 1.0
This program displays graphically the emission spectra of elements from 1 to 99, in the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet ranges. For Windows. Free
Programs for understanding atomic models
Available in German, English and French (don't let the front page deter you!), this nifty trio of Windows programs takes you from the Rutherford model to Schrödinger with lots of detail and great graphics. Free.
Chemis3D
For the web-site designers out there. This is a JAVA routine for displaying interactive molecular structures in web pages without the need for a plugin. Reads common file types like PDB and MOL. Free.
JMol
A JAVA molecular viewer for three-dimensional chemical structures. Features include reading a variety of file types and output from quantum chemistry programs, and animation of multi-frame files and computed normal modes from quantum programs. Free.
JME Molecular Editor
JAVA applet which allows the construction of molecular structures within a HTML page. SMILES strings can be generated from the structures and MDL *.mol files can also be output (Chime). Free, from Peter Ertl.
Orbital Viewer
This Windows program by David Manthey has a deceptive title. You can create all types of views of orbitals using this software and even generate movies of the orbital contours moving in space. Very impressive, and free.
ChemBalance Wizard
Freeware (Windows) for balancing chemical reactions. Accepts up to 10 chemical species as input and delivers one or more balanced equations.
Electrochemical cells Pro
Shareware with option to register. Allows you to construct a variety of galvanic cells and investigate the effects of changing temperature, concentration, pressure etc. For Windows. By Chemware.
WinQual
A laboratory simulation for inorganic qualitative analysis from Western Washington University. Fundamentally functional copies available for free download and trial.
The Learning Matters of Chemistry
An interesting site with a lot of multimedia examples and previews of the Atomic Orbitals CD-ROM
The Chemistry Animation Project at CalTech
At this site you can preview some of the videos produced by CAP (with a very generous duplication policy) and obtain information on ordering. You can also order online here.
ChemSketch 5.0
This FREE chemical drawing program from Advanced Chemistry Development (ACD) is for the PC. According to them "chemical drawing is fast and simple with a wide variety of atom and bond type buttons." You can "control font, valence line thickness, color, placement, etc." You get the idea. You also have the ability to export in a variety of popular formats (MOL, ISIS Sketch, GIF, etc.). There is a basic tutorial written by Bob Bruner here.
Periodic Table for Schools
Free periodic table software in both Mac and Windows versions by Helen and Peter Reid.
BK Periodic Library

Tim Allen's Chemistry programs
As he says, "not THAT Tim Allen", but this one knows his way around a programmer's toolkit. Check out his many different (free) programs covering different areas of chemistry.
Tom's Free Chemistry Software
Lot's here, but much is engineering-oriented or somewhat narrow and obscure. Still, worth a look.
ChemFont97
True-type font containing frequently used symbols, various reaction arrows, orbital box diagrams, etc. Free from Scientific Consulting Services. For Windows.
Chemistry True Type Font
Another chemistry font, this one from Frank Lanzafame.
