Chemical Structure Libraries

Note: This section contains only the relatively large collections of molecular structures I have encountered on the WWW. Smaller groups, such as those related to tutorials on VSEPR and the like, are listed on Topics pages appropriate to the subject matter.

Got Chime?
If you can see the rotating molecule above, you do.

Got Java?
If you can see the rotating molecule above, you do.

What's this? Initially most molecular structures for the WWW were presented in a format for rendering by the MDL Chime plugin. Many browser permutations later and many versions of Chime later (some less successful than others for certain browsers) an open-source JAVA project known as Jmol is starting to appear more frequently on web pages. The links below indicate which is used at the particular site.

Molecules listed by central atom, formula and/or name  Chime
This is an extensive collection which includes organic, inorganic and coordination compounds. Created by W.F. Coleman of Wellesley College.
3-D Virtual Chemistry Library--Molecular Database Project  Chime
From Imperial College. Some background information is given on each substance as well as the structure in several formats.
Molecular database without transition metals  Chime
Chime-enabled examples of all the categories in VSEPR. From Gérard Dupuis, Lycée Faidherbe de Lille, France.
Woodcock's Molecular Models  Chime
Searchable, organic database. Structures are in .pdb format, readable by Chime. From David Woodcock at Okanagan University College, Kelowna, British Columbia .
Visualizing molecules  Chime
Some introductory molecular geometry and a variety of small molecules and organic structures. From Scott Van Bramer at Widener University.
WWU Virtual Molecular Model Kit  Chime
A long, long list of various organic structures from the simple to the stereochemically complex. From Donald L. Pavia, Western Washington University.
The Molecular Library  Chime
Over 400 models from Harry Ungar at Cabrillo College.
Inorganic Chemistry Teaching Resources  Chime
Scot Wherland's site contains a 3-D periodic table of ionic radii as well as a structure library including quite a few coordination complexes. Washington State University.
Crystal Lattice structures  Chime, Jmol
From the Naval Research Laboratory.
VMRL File Creator for Chemical Structures
If you like this sort of thing, you can create a VMRL file (and save it locally) from a Smiles string or even from a local MOL or PDB (or other supported) file. Supports many options for display.
